"Bebe's Kids" is a animated movie is based on comedian Robin Harris' "Bébé's Kids" stand-up comedy act. It features the voices of Faizon Love (in his film debut), Marques Houston, Nell Carter, and Tone Lōc, as well as Tom Everett, Rich Little, and Louie Anderson.
This was one of the first animated films I saw as kid that depicted black characters and somewhat mirrored my background. It a profound effect on my artistic career and played a role in me becoming the illustrator I am today.
As an ode to the film and its impact on my life, I thought it'd be fun to recreate the characters as a character design exercise.
I played with a handful of models -- some super different from the original, some super close -- and, ultimately, decided I wanted to pay homage to their original character designs.
The tweaks are subtle. But if you put the characters side by side with the originals, the differences become apparent immediately.
